This area is devoted to sites specialising in the new Windows operating system Windows Vista. Some of these sites are also available on the drivers page and Microsoft specialist page.  As there is such a lot of interest in Vista I have brought them all here in a single,  handy area. Any new operating system brings with it several sites devoted especially to it and this is no exception.  There are many really great sites out there. I will try to add as many as I can as I find them.

Windows Vista How-Tos

  • Vista News is a superb newsletter that you can subscribe to. It offers hints, tips, advice and tweaks. It is a must visit site.

 

 

 

  • offers superb help for XP. There is a brilliant article on downloading network versions of SP1 onto your hard disk, and on slipstreaming the installation. This is a fabulous site with an e-mail newsletter that is well worth subscribing to. Learn it first at Windows-Help net.

  • Win XP Update from "updateXP.com" Microsoft's latest desktop operating system is a great improvement. Combining the reliability of Windows 2000 professional, multimedia enhancements, improved security - with a fresh new look has made Windows XP a very popular product. However when you install this new operating system on a computer that is not the end of the story! There is much that the user can do to enhance their personal experience. And so this website was born to do just that - Provide the Windows XP user with Windows XP Update information.

  • Notorious Networks Office XP SR1 Help, and Office XP SR2 help from Notorious Networks. They have a large list of help related articles and is well worth a visit.

  • Axcel 216 windows help pages. This site is huge... over 100 pages [with 1000+ ©tricks] and counting.
    So you need to take a break from whatever you were doing, brew a fresh coffee pot, fill up your XL mug sit back, relax, and only after that, dig in, 1 tip at a time.
    All these steps must be performed in this exact order for maximum comfort. :-)

  • Software Patch is the site to download support patches for all versions of Windows. It has an annoying popup routine but otherwise is very useful indeed. Collect the MS Java tool here amongst many.

 

  • Binks XP Source An excellent resource site with a huge links section. Well worth the visit.

  • Boot Vis is an excellent utility from Microsoft that lets you see what loads in XP and what to do to speed it up. "Customer research shows a frequently requested feature that users want from their PCs is fast system startup, whether from cold boot or when resuming from standby or hibernation. The Windows development team at Microsoft has taken bold steps in making fast startup PCs a reality with the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system. At this part of Microsoft you can see how to use it.

  • Doug Knox's tweaks and Tips. Windows XP, ME, 98 tips and help. Some of the Tweaks are present in more than one page, if they apply to more than one category. A very expertly written site offering loads of help.

  • Ed Botts free Windows XP Tips This is the complete collection of tips that originally appeared on the Focus on Windows site at About.com. Ed has been updating these tips, adding some much-needed information about Windows XP. He has also changed the navigation structure to make it easier to move around on the site. Finally, he's added some feature articles (adapted from material he originally wrote for About.com and the now-defunct Tech-Sanity) to this site. There is also a great article on the famous 811943 patch here>>

  • JustDL.IT is an excellent IT forum. There are news snippets, software reviews and generally interesting articles about XP and computers in general.

  • Kelly's XP Korner He's put together a lot of information from various sources, to help you find answers to the problems some users have with Windows XP. He's also put together some commonly requested tweaks and tips to make XP work the way you want it to

  • Lab Mice This site is determined to be the definitive online resource for IT Professionals who deploy, manage, and support Microsoft products and services. They locate and consolidate the best resources from hundreds of the biggest tech sites, and sort them by topic. Each one of their 14,625 links are hand picked, and verified weekly.   • Neo win win is a Fan site that is well written, has great content and has the recommendation of Windows XP Magazine.

  • Optimize XP  Andrew K wrote the Windows XP Optimization Guide after being unable to find a comprehensive one online or at least one that he would consider comprehensive. he avoids using or recommending "all-in-one" Windows XP Tweak programs since many blindly adjust settings that can cause future problems. The guide is aimed at getting the best performance out of windows without using any shareware or retail programs.

  • Paul Thurrott's Win Supersite is dedicated to providing all of the information you need to evaluate Microsoft's current and upcoming Windows operating system technologies. These exciting products include Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2 (code-named Harmony), Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Version 2, among others. All are due by the end of 2003

 

  • Theme XP gives a new face to Windows XP.

  • Tack Tech  founders, Kevin and Travis created the site with intents to centralize their vast computer knowledge. It soon became a useful tool to visitors and became more than a collection of information, it became a community.
    They began to interact with visitors creating technical articles by request and presenting them in an easy graphical presentation. This offers a vast amount of information and I especially found the Office XP slipstream articles a great help.

  • Tweak XP the worlds first site and best site dedicated to improving and customizing Microsoft® Windows® XP. Try their excellent tips to aid performance here>>

USB Man is an excellent resource for all types of information and updates relating to USB. The Windows XP Patch is here>> in the trouble shooting section.

  • Waynes Administrator site for W2000, Win NT and XP. This site named "is it true" is really excellent I found it when trawling for information on the boot.ini file and this page was a great taste for the whole site. Excellent!

 

  • Win XP FixFix A new site with loads of information on Windows XP. A great site for tech support, tips and links.

  • Windows XP-NU This is an extremely well set out and colourful site. It is written by Stephen Binks and based in the Netherlands. It offers large amounts of tech support and tips. News breaking on the new Windows XP codenamed "longhorn" due for release 2005. There are downloads, demos and a great video on what the next XP should have. This is a very good site indeed.

  • Windows XP User The definitive online guide for users and soon-to-be users of Microsoft's newest operating system Windows XP

  • Windows XP Services. Black Viper offers a great deal of help on Windows XP and information on what services run. This was a PC Answers recommended site and worth a trawl Information on Windows 2000 as well.

  • Windows Process Library In the recesses of your computer, 20-30 invisible processes run silently in the background. Some hog system resources, turning your PC into a sluggish computer. Worse yet, other useless processes harbour spyware and Trojans - violating your privacy and giving hackers free reign on your computer. WinTasks Process Library is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to know the exact purpose of every single process.

 

Slipstream and Install
  • Tweak Town is the site for all of those tweaks and patches for Windows and Windows XP.  
    You can also find an excellent article here covering all the items you need to successfully upgrade your copy of SP1.

  • Xploiting XP is a Mac based site that gives tons of XP Information.

 

  XPCREATE is a utility program that will combine an original XP distribution disk, the assorted hot fixes and updates to produce an up-to-date XP Distribution CD.
XPCREATE allows the user to define custom installations and setup programs, but it's main richness lies in the slipstreaming of most available updates and hot fixes, thus insuring the integrity of both the initial installation, and the physical CD media.
Slipstreaming the latest hot fixes and updates is important in avoiding possible vulnerability attacks during the setup phase, and in avoiding the need to re-apply hot fixes after a windows component is added or removed.

 

 

 

 

Slipstream and Install
  • The Magical Jelly Bean offers an excellent key finder for Office XP and Windows XP. This freeware utility  retrieves your Product Key (CD key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP. This version is a quick update to make it work with Windows Server 2003. The latest version also offers the ability to change the key as well. A very useful tool! There is also a range of equally useful tools on freeware offer.

  • No Good Pig - XP Fix gives software download and  fixes. A great site for slipstreaming and installation of Windows XP.

 

  • MCSEworld aims to provide the maximum amount of free MCSE knowledge in a format which is easy to access and helpful to the beginner and the practicing professional alike. MCSEworld is a private website created and operated by Daniel Petri, See Site Profile for more details. The Slipstreaming article is thorough and well worth checking out.To assist working IT professionals in Microsoft shops to find the information they need for practical problem-solving. Often a problem, by its very nature, is something outside our immediate experience, and we need to-the-point information quickly in order to solve it.
